The place
Sugar Bowl doesn't feel like a resort. It feels like a mountain town that happens to have lifts. Founded in 1939 by Austrian ski champion Hannes Schroll, the snowbound village at Donner Summit was built with the spirit of the European Alps in mind — and that spirit never left. No shopping malls, no casinos, no distractions. Just the mountain, the snow, and the kind of community that keeps coming back winter after winter. Walt Disney was among the original visionaries who helped build it. Charlie Chaplin filmed The Gold Rush on these slopes before there were even lifts. Over 80 years later, the culture is still all about the skiing.
